Protesters have thrown tomato soup over Van Gogh's "Sunflowers".
Two women from the activist group "Just stop oil" walked into the National Gallery in London and threw a content of two Heinz Tomato Soup over the famous Van Gogh masterpiece and glued their hands to the wall. The painting was painted in 1888 and has an estimated value of 72,5 million pounds. The National Gallery claims that the art is unharmed, there is only some damage to the frame of the painting. After unsticking the activists from the wall, they were arrested for criminal damage and aggravated trespass.
"Just Stop Oil" is an activist group in the UK, which wants the UK government to halt new licenses and fossil fuel production because of its harm to the environment. In my opinion, devastating the famous Van Gogh's masterpiece is not the most rational way to fight with the government and show the need for environmental protection. Art is one of our cultural heritage, it inspires and delights people, but it does not encourage people to use fossil fuels. I think that these protest methods would not work at all and it won't attract many people to support the "Just Stop Oil" postulates. This group is well known for its controversial and aggressive mode of action, especially for the staged vandalism of works of art. Their goals are not so bad, but in my opinion, their methods wouldn't work.
