How does alcohol makes us drunk?

Due to the popularization of alcohol, I think that most people in the world at least once in a lifetime experience alcohol consumption effects. But not everyone knows how actually alcohol work and how it makes us drunk. "The main player" in this process is ethanol - the primary ingredient in alcoholic drinks. Ethanol starts to affect our body from the moment it gets into our mouth. Through small blood vessels in our mouth and on our tongue, some ethanol gets into our bloodstream in just a few seconds. The main role alcohol plays in our stomach, 20% of alcohol in our stomach goes into our bloodstream, the rest of it goes there when ethanol gets into our small intestine. If our stomach is full, alcohol will stay there longer, reaching out to our bloodstream longer. The effect of drunkness is dependent on the amount of alcohol in our bloodstream at one time, so when we have an empty stomach, alcohol goes directly into our blood, making us drunk faster and stronger.
Our bloodstream distributes the alcohol through our body really quickly, affecting different parts before the liver breaks it down. Alcohol reaches our brain in 5 minutes, and we can start feeling all effects in just 10 minutes after drinking it. It starts by stimulating the release of dopamine and serotonin, which makes us feel happy, more sociable, and empathetic after drinking alcohol. Unfortunately, it also affects our central nervous system and breaks our brain's communication pathways, making us experience more unpleasant physical symptoms after drinking more. Ethanol also limits ADH production in our brain, it is an antidiuretic hormone that tells our kidneys how much water it has to conserve. Due to it, they release more water, making us pee more often after drinking. It often leads to dehydration and a hangover the next day.
The final stage is our liver, which works hard to convert alcohol into water and carbon monoxide, to make us sober again.
As you can see, alcohol has a long journey in our body, affecting a lot of different parts of it to make us feel drunk.

  1. This is an interesting description.
It seems that if you drink lots of water alongside alcohol you can prevent the hangover. Right?
