Can marijuana be used for medical purposes?
Marijuana is a well-known drug, which is widely used by people recreationally, to get "high", experiencing different effects of drug consumption, like the sense of relaxation and pleasant euphoria. Marijuana is actually the name for the dried leaves and flowers of the Cannabis sativa or the Cannabis Indica plant, which contains more than 100 chemicals called cannabinoids. The main two of them: Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) affect our body the strongest, creating the effects called "high". But there are some other purposes for using these chemicals. Our body produces really similar chemicals that are involved in for example body movement, memory, and pain or appetite feeling. Cannabinoids contained in marijuana can be used to treat disorders related to these things. Due to it, the term "Medical marijuana" was born. Medical marijuana is actually the same thing as a recreational one, but it's used for medical purposes. Many researchers, especially nowadays, are studying the medical properties of drugs, which can actually help people with for example appetite loss, Alzheimer's disease, eating disorders, epilepsy, and PTSD. Cannabinoids can also: reduce anxiety, relieve pain, control nausea or vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy, stimulate appetite and improve weight gain and also kill cancer cells, and slow tumor growth. Unfortunately, lots of research about the medical purposes of marijuana are limited or blocked by law, DEA considers marijuana a Schedule 1 drug, the same as heroin or ecstasy. Maybe in the future, it will change and we will have more scientific research about the medical purposes of marijuana which can improve the medicine, helping treat a lot of disorders.
More and more countries, including many states in the US, are allowing marijuana for medicinal and recreational use so it seems the attitude towards it is relaxing.
